The Evolution of Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus was born on November 23rd, 1992 as Destiny Hope Cyrus to famous “Achy Breaky Heart” singer Billy Ray Cyrus and his wife Tish. From a young age Miley was always happy and smiling, so her father nicknamed her Smiley which later turned into just Miley. Miley grew up in Tennessee with her family and at 8 years old they all moved to Canada for Billy Ray’s show “Doc.” Around this time Miley herself decided she wanted to act too, which lead to a guest appearance on her dad’s show “Doc” and a small role in Tim Burton’s 2003 film “Big Fish.”
Miley’s first starring role came in 2005 with the Disney Channel’s hit show “Hannah Montana.” The show was about a teenage girl living the life of a normal girl by day and an international pop star by night. The role required Miley to not only act, but sing as well. To no one’s surprise, Miley rocked as her alter ego Hannah Montana. The show was a mega-hit for the Disney Channel, and it led to several chart topping albums, sold out tours, and merchandise being sold all around the world.
During her “Hannah Montana” years, Miley managed to put out three chart topping albums on top of her “Hannah Montana” CD’s. Her first all Miley album came out in 2008, and was called “Breakout.” The album received rave reviews and eventually went platinum. Some of the notable songs from the album include “7 Things,” “Fly on the Wall,” “See You Again,” and a cover of the popular Cyndi Lauper tune “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” Her second all Miley album “The Time of Our Lives” was released in 2009, and again received positive reviews. “The Time of Our Lives” was considered an effective step towards adulthood for Miley. Her most famous song from this album was “Party in the U.S.A.” Her third album “Can’t Be Tamed” was released in 2010 and showed a more adult side to Miley.
Not only did Miley star as “Hannah Montana” from 2006-2011 in the hit TV show, but she also starred in 2009’s “Hannah Montana: The Movie.” Her other film roles include “The Last Song,” “LOL,” and “So Undercover.” “The Last Song” is an adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel. Nicholas Sparks wrote the role of Veronica “Ronnie” Miller especially for Miley Cyrus. The movie was released in 2010 to mixed reviews. Although the film did fairly well at the box office, Cyrus was harshly criticized for her performance as a rebellious daughter. On the set of “The Last Song,” Miley met her future fiancé Liam Hemsworth, who was her love interest in the film. Her second film “LOL” was a remake of a popular French film with the same title. In the movie, Cyrus plays the daughter of Demi Moore. The movie is about living life and facing the hardships of growing up in the digital age. The film was given a limited release in 2012, and was faced with mostly negative reviews. This film fared far better than her next film “So Undercover.” “So Undercover” was released straight to DVD in 2013. The film starred Miley as a FBI agent, and Jeremy Piven as her superior. “So Undercover” received horrible reviews, and left Miley fans a little disappointed.
Throughout her career, Miley has never been a stranger to controversy. Her first big controversy came in 2007 when scandalous photos of Miley and a friend were released on the internet. In 2008, at just 15, Miley posed topless for photographer Annie Leibowitz in Vanity Fair magazine. Another scandal came in December 2010 when Miley was videotaped taking a hit of salvia from a bong at a party, which she later poked fun of on Saturday Night Live. In recent years, Miley has been recognized mainly for her controversies. In 2012, she got engaged to actor Liam Hemsworth at the age of 19. In 2012 Miley cut off all of her hair, which stunned fans everywhere. Lately though, it seems Miley and Liam have hit a rough patch, with images surfacing of Liam with actress January Jones. In February 2013, images surfaced on the internet of Miley smoking pot, which came as no surprise to many people.
One thing is for sure, Miley Cyrus can’t be tamed (pun intended!). She does what she wants when she wants to, and she is still growing up. But she is a great person. She contributes to many charities, and is also an activist for equal rights. At such a young age she has done so much, and she is definitely going to be in the spotlight for many years to come.
